CIVL 482 Municipal Water Engineering

This course describes the engineering aspects of the provision of potable water, and the collection, treatment and disposal of wastewater in the urban environment. In addition, consideration is given to the movement and treatment of storm water flows. Topics include the quality of water supplies and the characteristics of wastewater; methods for the estimation of water consumption and sewage generation; the chemical and physical treatment of water for drinking purposes; design of water distribution systems; design of wastewater collection systems; physical, chemical and biological wastewater treatment; effluent and sludge disposal; and the financial considerations given to these systems. In addition, alternative urban development strategies are discussed (i.e. water conservation and internal reuse). The laboratories illustrate basic analytical methods which provide data for design of these systems. Students will carry out a design project at the end of the course.
